Former Sen. Bob Dole lies in state
A Thursday morning memorial ceremony brought about 100 invited guests as former Sen. Bob Dole lay in state at the U.S. Capitol. President Joe Biden called the longtime Republican senator and 1996 presidential nominee a “giant of our history.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Dole was honored among the “pantheon of patriots.” Dole, a World War II veteran, served nearly 36 years in Congress. He died on Sunday at the age of 98.
Where will he be buried? Biden and other current and former leaders in Washington will join the Dole family for a private service on Friday morning at the Washington National Cathedral. The funeral will be livestreamed on the National Mall, and his motorcade will stop by later at an event honoring his life and military service. Dole’s casket will then travel to his Kansas hometown of Russell and the state Capitol. He is to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
