Former Proud Boys leader sentenced to 22 years for Jan. 6 riot
On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly handed down the sentence to Enrique Tarrio, former National Chairman of the Proud Boys. A jury in May found Tarrio guilty of seditious conspiracy and other felony charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol. Tarrio’s is the longest sentence handed down in connection with the riots.
What did Tarrio do during the riots? Tarrio was not at the scene of the physical riots. However, he was convicted of playing a key role in inciting Proud Boys members to storm the Capitol. Tarrio had pleaded for mercy during the sentencing hearing, while prosecutors had asked for a stiffer sentence—33 years behind bars.
