The FBI on Thursday announced that a foreign national pleaded guilty earlier this week to healthcare fraud, targeting Medicare Advantage plans.
Sevindik Huseynov, a national of Azerbaijan, submitted $137 million in fake claims for medical equipment using a sham company and fraudulent patient and doctor data, according to the Department of Justice. He deposited over $2.8 million in reimbursement checks overseas into a personal account. He was arrested in June and pleaded guilty to three counts of healthcare fraud on Tuesday.
Huseynov admitted to submitting thousands of fraudulent claims to Medicare Advantage organizations through his fraudulent durable medical equipment company. The claims were submitted on behalf of unsuspecting beneficiaries and sought reimbursement for medical equipment such as wound dressing and orthotic braces, according to the DOJ. The equipment was never provided, medically unnecessary, and not authorized by doctors.
How is the United States fighting fraud? On April 7, 2026, the Department of Justice announced the creation of the National Fraud Enforcement Division, which investigates and prosecutes fraud against the American people. The division supports President Donald Trump’s task force to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse in federal benefit programs.
