Florida nightclub shooting not terror-related
Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the violence
Police in Fort Myers, Fla., said this morning an overnight shooting at a nightclub hosting a party for teenagers was not an act of terrorism.
Two people died in the attack—a 14-year-old and an 18-year-old. At least 17 others were wounded, the youngest just 12 years old. Most of the victims did not sustain life-threatening injuries and have been released from the hospital already. Three remain hospitalized.
“While we are still learning the details about what happened this morning, we know that some of the victims of this terrible incident were children,” Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement. “We will continue to pray for the victims and their families.”
Investigators do not yet know what sparked the violence, but three people are in custody for questioning. The shooting started at about 12:30 a.m., as parents were picking up their teens from the swimsuit-themed party, according to a post on Club Blu’s Facebook page. The club’s managers said they were trying to give the teens a safe place to have a good time.
According to state records, Club Blu lost its liquor license earlier this summer because of an incident that occurred last year. The club also faced a complaint for unspecified “criminal activity” in 2014.
