Florida expects more rain after massive deluge

In roughly six hours on Wednesday afternoon, storms dropped up to 20 inches of rain in many areas of south Florida. Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport shut down in response to the rain and subsequent flooding, saying it would reopen on Friday. The rain also turned many roadways into rivers. Broward County schools canceled classes on Thursday due to flooding. Fort Lauderdale expected more rain to hit the city on Thursday, but not as much as on Wednesday.

How frequent are storms like this? The Fort Lauderdale record for the most rain in one day was set in 1979 at roughly 14.5 inches. This event could shatter that record.
