Flood warnings issued across California due to severe winter storm
Transportation authorities in Southern California closed dozens of roads Monday because of heavy rain and mudslides. The Santa Barbara Airport also closed Monday due to flooding on the airfield. The National Weather Service issued flood watches for Los Angeles and other cities in Southern California through Wednesday and warned residents to watch for landslides and dangerous surf along the coast. The storm was forecast to bring five to eight inches of rain across the region and winds up to 60 miles per hour, according to AccuWeather.
Has the region experienced other winter storms this year? Torrential rain battered Southern California for several days earlier this month and triggered hundreds of mudslides. At least nine people died due to falling trees, car accidents, and power outages, according to the Los Angeles Times. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency during the storm and airports canceled thousands of flights.
