Five people shot at Brooklyn parade, suspect still at large
A man opened fire at New York’s West Indian American Day Parade on Monday in Brooklyn, injuring four men and a woman, said New York Police Department Chief of Patrol John Chell. The parade, which celebrated the Caribbean heritage of countries like the West Indies, continued despite the violent interruption. On Tuesday, all five victims were in stable condition, according to local news reports. Two victims were in critical condition as of Monday afternoon. Authorities released very few identifying details about the suspect, saying he was 20s with a slender build.
Was the shooting random? The gunman was intentionally targeting a group of people, Chell said at the press conference. He declined to speak about the shooter’s motive, saying it’s way too early to say what sparked the shooting. Although the suspect got away, he was not considered an active shooter, Chell added. The chief called on parade attendees to help investigators by submitting any video recording of the attack.
