Five dead in shooting at Washington state mall
One of the five victims was a 16-year-old girl
UPDATE (11:50 p.m.): Authorities have arrested a suspect in the deadly mall shooting in Burlington, Wash., Friday night. The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management announced on Twitter this evening that the shooter had been captured. No other details about the suspect were given. Law enforcement searched for him for over 20 hours before making an arrest.
Central United Methodist Church in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., held a prayer service tonight in memory of the four women and one man who died in the shooting. Area media identified one of the victims as 16-year-old Sarai Lara, who went to the mall with her older sister to shop for pants.
OUR EARLIER REPORT: A gunman at a Macy’s store in a Washington state mall killed five people Friday evening and remains at large. Police in Burlington, Wash., are searching for a Hispanic man who was wearing black and armed with a “hunting-type” rifle. He was last seen moving toward Interstate 5. A helicopter, search teams, and K-9 units scoured the area around Cascade Mall on Friday night.
“We are still actively looking for the shooter,” Washington State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Francis said at a news conference. “Stay indoors, stay secure.” Four women and one man died in the attack. Authorities say the motive is unknown.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police evacuated the mall and closed the parking lot. A bus transported survivors to a nearby church, CNN reported, and local residents were asked to avoid the area around the mall during the manhunt.
