Horror in Wisconsin: SUV plows through parade
At least five people died and more than 40 were injured on Sunday in downtown Waukesha, Wis., when a vehicle sped along West Main Street, hitting spectators and participants in the town’s annual Christmas parade. Witnesses described seeing crumpled bodies lying in the road after a red SUV plowed through the parade route, with victims ranging from schoolchildren to members of a troupe of “Dancing Grannies.”
What caused the incident? Police Chief Dan Thompson said authorities had detained a “person of interest” but did not disclose the driver’s identity or motive as the investigation continues. He confirmed that an officer fired his gun to try to stop the vehicle, but did not know whether the driver was hit. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee spokeswoman Sandra Peterson said a priest, several parishioners, and some Waukesha Catholic schools students were also among the injured. Waukesha is a western suburb of Milwaukee.
