In a statement on Monday, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., characterized the search of her home in Washington, D.C., as an intimidation tactic by the Trump administration and vowed to continue pushing back on her political opponents. Individuals wearing Homeland Security Investigations uniforms searched the Minnesota congresswoman’s home in Washington on Monday morning. Bystander footage of the raid appeared to show multiple officials carrying out various boxes labeled as seized evidence.
Omar, who is running for reelection, accused President Donald Trump of repeatedly targeting her with lies and smear campaigns for the past decade. Her Democratic allies Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., released similar statements, accusing the Trump administration of weaponizing federal power against political opponents.
Minnesota Republican Party Chair Alex Plechash released a Monday statement noting that the raid was authorized by a judicial search warrant. Omar herself said in 2023 that no one is above the law regardless of the power they hold, and Minnesota Republicans couldn’t agree more, Plechash said.
What investigation is the raid linked to? Although it’s unclear exactly what federal agents were looking for on Monday, Vice President J.D. Vance has previously alluded to federal investigators probing Omar for possible immigration fraud. Investigators have also uncovered widespread federal funding fraud linked to the Somali community in her home state in recent years.
WORLD reached out to the Department of Justice and the FBI for more details on the investigation and raid but did not receive immediate responses. The Department of Homeland Security referred WORLD to the DOJ in response to a comment request.
