FBI: Orlando attack not motivated by victims’ sexuality

FBI agents investigating last month’s mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando have so far found no evidence that attacker Omar Mateen chose his victims because of their sexuality. “While there can be no denying the significant impact on the gay community, the investigation hasn’t revealed that he targeted Pulse because it was a gay club,” a U.S. law enforcement official told The Washington Post. Agents found no evidence that Mateen disliked gays on any of his electronic devices. They also point to comments Mateen made to a 911 dispatcher during the attack, which included a pledge of allegiance to Islamic State terrorists but no homosexual slurs. Although initial reports indicated Mateen might have been gay, FBI agents could find no evidence he used gay dating apps. Instead, investigators found evidence he was cheating on his wife with another woman. Law enforcement officials say they may never be able to piece together a full picture of why Mateen attacked Pulse, killing 49 people and wounding 53 others.
