Family-friendly movies top box office charts in 2024
Disney’s Moana 2 ranked number one at the domestic box office over the Thanksgiving weekend, and has raked in about $225 million domestically since opening last Wednesday. The film boasts the highest five-day opening of all time, according to a release from Disney. The movie has made nearly $390 million worldwide, and is part of a trend this year that saw family-friendly and PG-rated movies consistently finding success at the box office. As of Dec. 3, four of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024 so far are animated films, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
Which other films have ranked highly this year? Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 earned more than $650 million in domestic box offices this year, and Universal’s Despicable Me 4 and Kung Fu Panda 4 also did well. Meanwhile, Wicked set a record for the most successful opening weekend for a Broadway adaptation and earned more than $114 million during its domestic opening.
