Facebook video shows aftermath of police shooting
A viral video on Facebook captured the moments after an officer shot and killed Philando Castile, an African-American man in his 30s, during a traffic stop in a St. Paul, Minn., suburb Wednesday. It’s unclear what led to the shooting, but the woman who took the video identified herself as Castile’s girlfriend and broadcast live from her cellphone as police had her get out of the car. She said her boyfriend was pulled over for having a broken tail light, and he told the officer he had a firearm that he was licensed to carry. The officer shot Castile as he reached for his wallet, the woman said. The officer, who has not been identified, can be heard on the video saying, “I told him not to reach for it. I told him to get his head up,” to which the woman responded, “You told him to get his ID, sir, his driver’s license. Oh my God, please don’t tell me he’s dead.” Supporters of Castile’s family gathered at the scene of the shooting and outside the governor’s mansion Wednesday to demand an official response. Gov. Mark Dayton called for the Justice Department to investigate and said the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension had opened its own investigation.
