European leaders urge China to push for peace in Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Macron urged Xi to “bring Russia to its senses and bring everyone back to the negotiating table.” Beijing is one of Moscow’s closest allies and released a position paper in February calling for a cease-fire in Ukraine. European Union Chief Ursula von der Leyen also attended the meetings and said she was encouraged that Xi is willing to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The trip was von der Leyen’s first visit to China since taking office in 2019.

What else is happening in China? The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia met in Beijing on Thursday after China last month brokered a deal to restore relations between the countries. It was the first formal gathering of the nations’ top diplomats in over seven years.
