Ethiopia, Tigray agree to cease-fire
Representatives from both governments confirmed the terms of the agreement on Thursday—terms that include quick disarmament of Tigrayan forces and restoration of Ethiopian control in all federal facilities in the region. Tigray’s lead negotiator described the agreement as containing “painful concessions” for his country. The complete agreement has not yet been made public, nor have details about the discussion leading up to the signing of the deal.
Why have they been fighting? Ethiopia and Tigray have fought a civil war for the past two years, which is believed to have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. Tigray’s lead negotiator said that not only have bullets killed his people but lack of food and medicine has been a factor, as well. The United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross said they had not yet resumed the delivery of humanitarian aid to Tigray.
