Equipment on tracks derails New York subway train
New York’s transportation authority blamed poorly stored equipment for causing a subway train derailment that injured nearly three-dozen people Tuesday. Metropolitan Transport Authority Chairman Joe Lhota and Interim Executive Director Ronnie Hakim in a joint statement said a replacement rail was improperly stored on the tracks. The statement said it’s a common practice to store the equipment in between tracks, provided it is properly bolted down. Passengers on the train recounted seeing sparks through the windows as the train went off course. The derailment tossed several passengers to the floor and forced hundreds of others to evacuate the station.
