Earthquake strikes Greece and Turkey

Rescue workers in the worst-hit Turkish city of Izmir on Monday withdrew two girls alive from the rubble of their apartment building, three days after the earthquake hit. Search teams also rescued a 70-year-old man from a collapsed building on Sunday night. Turkish authorities reported at least 83 people died and 962 others sustained injuries in Izmir by Monday. The Friday earthquake was centered in the Aegean Sea northeast of Samos, according to the Kandilli Observatory in Turkey. The country’s emergency management agency said it measured the quake at magnitude 6.6.

How bad is the damage? Environment Minister Murat Kurum said the earthquake damaged and heavily destroyed 58 buildings. Authorities provided more than 3,500 tents and 13,000 beds to people displaced by the disaster, according to the national emergency body. Two teenagers died and 19 people sustained injuries on the island of Samos.
