Earthquake rattles southwest Japan

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake rattled the country on Monday, according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency. The quake, which occurred at about 9:19 p.m. locally, 7:19 EST, originated in the southwestern island of Kyushu at a depth of about 18 miles. Officials did not immediately report any casualties or injuries on Monday. Local media reported that trains were delayed.

What about tsunamis? The meteorological agency on Monday withdrew a tsunami advisory after a 3.2 foot-high wave made landfall soon after the earthquake. Authorities warned residents to stay away from the coast as high waves were still possible.
