A Soviet-era plane carrying 43 passengers and six crew members crashed Thursday in a rural part of eastern Russia near the border with China. Everyone on board died in the incident, according to a translation of a post by regional governor Vasily Orlov. Russia’s Investigative Committee for Transport said it had opened an investigation into possible safety violations but did not specify a cause of the crash, according to reports from the Associated Press and Reuters.
What happened to the plane? The Antonov An-24 aircraft was flying from the town of Blagoveshchensk to Tynda when it crashed in a wooded area, according to Russian state news agency Tass. It lost contact with the control tower after it failed to land and was performing a second approach to the small airfield when it crashed. The plane was built about 50 years ago, according to a Tass report.
