Dozens escape, 14 dead in Mexican prison break

Gunmen in armored vehicles Sunday morning attacked a Juárez prison, just across the border from El Paso, Texas. They killed 10 guards and four inmates during the attack and allowed at least 24 inmates to escape. Chihuahua state police officers with troops from the army and Mexican National Guard regained control of the prison by noon. The Chihuahua state prosecutor’s office said it was investigating the attack. Juárez city police officers arrested four men.

Has this happened before? In August, gang-related violence broke out in the same state prison in Juárez. The violence spread to the streets, killing 11 in shootings. Schools and businesses closed early that day because of safety concerns. Aug. 11 is now known as “Black Thursday.”
