Dozens dead after bus crash in Guatemala

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo on Monday said he would declare a day of national mourning following a crash at the Belize Bridge in Guatemala City. At least 51 people died in the crash and others suffered serious injuries, the Associated Press reported. Arévalo said he’d deployed the Guatemalan military and other emergency personnel to the scene to help care for the wounded.

What happened? A multi-vehicle collision sent the bus off a bridge on the outskirts of Guatemala City shortly before dawn, the Associated Press reported. The bus fell roughly 115 feet into a stream polluted by sewage, where it came to rest upside down and half underwater, the outlet added.
