Authorities on Tuesday extradited 20-year-old Muhammad Shahzeb Khan from Canada to the United States following an indictment filed in the Southern District of New York. Khan was charged with attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State group’s Iraq chapter and the al-Sham terrorist organization.
He tried to enter the United States to commit a mass shooting targeting the Jewish community in New York City, FBI Director Kash Patel said. Khan was allegedly planning to attack on Oct. 7 last year — the anniversary of the terrorist attacks in Israel, Patel said. He was arrested by Canadian officials in September 2024. The Pakistani national was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
What else is known about the planned attack? Khan intended to target a Jewish center in Brooklyn, New York, and admitted to working with a U.S.-based Islamic State group supporter to plan the attack, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Canadian authorities arrested Khan as he attempted to reach the U.S.-Canada border.
