Death toll reaches 90 in Mexico following earthquake

At least 90 people have died from the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico’s southern region late Thursday night. Oaxaca state Gov. Alejandro Murat said 71 people died in his state, while government officials in Chiapas and Tabasco reported that 19 people have died in those states. In the Oaxacan city of Juchitan, about a third of the homes are uninhabitable and many residents have slept in the streets because of the fear of aftershocks. Local officials counted nearly 800 aftershocks, while the U.S. Geological Survey registered nearly 60 with a magnitude of 4.5 or higher. On Sunday evening, Bishop Oscar Campos Contreras celebrated Mass on an open-air basketball court in Juchitan, after many churches in the town were either destroyed or deemed unsafe. “There is no one who can say: Nothing happened to me because of my money, because of my strength or my youth or my prestige or my fame,” he said. “We are all weak.” Teams of soldiers, federal police, and volunteers have started to demolish damaged buildings and distribute water and clothing.
