Death toll climbs to 96 in Maui wildfires
Hawaiian authorities on Sunday continued identifying and searching for the deceased. On Saturday, workers said they had covered only 3 percent of the search area, and they expected the death toll to keep rising. The wildfire on the island is already the deadliest on U.S. soil in more than a century. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said it would be the worst natural disaster his state had ever faced.
What caused the wildfire? Authorities are still uncertain how the fires started. But high wind speed from a nearby hurricane and dry conditions helped spread the flames as they tore through the island, almost completely leveling the town of Lahaina.
