Darren Wilson resigns from Ferguson Police Department

Darren Wilson, the Ferguson, Mo., police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, has resigned his position, his attorney announced today.

“There’s no way in the world he can go back to being a police officer,” attorney Neil Bruntrager said earlier this week. Wilson had been on administrative leave since the Aug. 9 shooting of Brown, who was 18. Wilson said Brown attacked through his car window just before the shooting. A grand jury decided Monday not to indict Wilson on criminal charges in the death of Brown, who was unarmed.

Wilson said he has a clean conscience because “I know I did my job right.” Brown’s shooting was the first time he fired his gun on the job, he said.

Bruntrager said the national fury over the case made it too dangerous for Wilson to return to the force. “The first day he would be back on the street something terrible would happen to him or to someone that would be working with him,” he told CNN.
