Crews search rubble for California fire victims

Search crews in Sonoma County, Calif., are combing through the rubble of burned out homes in search of those still missing. Although the list of residents unaccounted for dwindled as evacuees checked in with friends and family, officials are still trying to track down 88 people. Sonoma County Sheriff Robert Giordano on Monday said he expects searchers will find at least some of them in their burned-out homes. Search teams are using dogs to help sniff out any human remains among the ash and debris left behind. The death toll from the blazes in California’s wine country now stands at 41, but Giordano expects it to rise. While many residents can return to their neighborhoods to sort through what’s left, about 34,000 remain under mandatory evacuation orders. Almost all the wine country fires are contained, but California firefighters are battling several new fires that sprang up overnight. One is burning on Mount Wilson, about 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, while the other sparked to life in the southern Bay Area Santa Cruz mountains.
