Church plans vigil for those affected by Wisconsin school shooting
City Church, the parent church of Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, has scheduled a prayer service to honor the victims of Monday’s fatal school shooting. The service is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be live-streamed online. The public is invited to attend. That live-stream can be accessed by clicking here.
On Monday night, Madison police confirmed that three people died as a result of the shootings at Abundant Life Christian School. They included a teacher and a student, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released. The shooter, identified by police Monday night as a 15-year-old female student, was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital. A total of six people, including five students and one teacher, were injured in the shooting. Two of those students were listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, as of Monday night. The others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Other Tuesday night vigils were planned in addition to the one scheduled at City Church. St. Ambrose Academy students plan to hold a separate vigil Tuesday night at the St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Madison to pray for the victims and survivors. The school posted a message saying that it hoped the vigil would help bring peace, strength, and unity in Jesus Christ, the one who dispels the world’s darkness.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Dane County and the United Way of Dane County also planned to hold a candlelight vigil Tuesday night at the State Capitol. President of the Dane County Boys and Girls Clubs Michael Johnson told a local news outlet he hoped the vigil would bring the community together in the face of unimaginable grief. Johnson also said the community’s response went beyond thoughts and prayers. A leader in the local Muslim community planned to install free security systems at Abundant Life and other local schools, he shared in a Tuesday Facebook post.
United Way of Dane County also began collecting donations for a recovery fund for Abundant Life Christian School on Tuesday. United Way is ready to help the community recover, the non-profit’s president and CEO, Renee Moe, said in a statement. She urged the public to give with their hearts, because every dollar mattered. Abundant Life Christian School Principal Doug Butler in a written statement said he was grateful for the overwhelming community support. The school would establish a clear process for distributing funds to best support families at the school, Butler said in the United Way press release.
