Car bomb in Afghanistan kills 29 people

A suicide car bomb exploded Thursday morning in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, killing about 29 people, many of them civilians. The bomb went off outside a bank and injured about 60 other people. Health officials said they expect the death toll to rise. Police spokesman Salam Afghan told Agence France-Presse many civilians and Afghan soldiers had queued up outside the bank to collect their salaries. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Helmand province remains a battlefront between Afghan forces and the Taliban, which controls a large portion of the province. An attack last month targeting Kabul’s highly secure diplomatic area killed at least 90 people.
