British PM Liz Truss resigns
After 45 days in office, Liz Truss gave her resignation to King Charles III on Thursday, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in the United Kingdom’s history. Just a day before, she had said she was a fighter and she wouldn’t quit. But Thursday morning, a senior administrator quit and the House of Commons descended into shouts of “resign” as Truss tried to speak. Her party has been in turmoil since she tried to cut taxes without cutting public spending.
What happens now? Truss will remain as prime minister until the Conservative party picks a new leader. Among the potential candidates is the person she beat to become the prime minister, ex-Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, as well as House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt and newly appointed Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt.
