Brazilian president testifies in impeachment trial
Suspended Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff testified before the country’s Senate today, telling lawmakers history would judge them if they voted to permanently remove her from office. As she has throughout the scandal, Rousseff maintained her innocence. “My conscience is clear,” she told senators. Last year, one of Rousseff’s political opponents accused her of breaking fiscal rules to hide problems in the federal budget. Those moves ultimately made the country’s severe recession worse, her opponents claim. But the accusations are ironic given how many other lawmakers are under investigation for outright corruption. Lawmakers are expected to vote tomorrow or Wednesday on the final impeachment decision.
