Bomb explodes on London subway
An explosion on a London subway train during the Friday morning rush hour injured at least 22 people. Metropolitan Police are calling the incident at the Parsons Green underground station in the southwest section of the city a terrorist attack. The London Ambulance Service confirmed it transported 18 people to hospitals, but none with life-threatening injuries. Four others went directly to hospitals for treatment on their own. Mark Rowly, head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police, said most of the injured suffered from “flash burns.” Several passengers said they heard a bang and saw a fireball inside the train shortly after 8 a.m. Photos and video taken inside the District Line train show a white plastic bucket inside a foil-lined shopping bag with flames and what appears to be wires coming out of the top. Rowley said an improvised explosive device likely caused the explosion. Olaniyi Shokumbi, who was heading to work on the train, told The Guardian he saw hundreds of people screaming and running out of the station. “It was tightly packed as we were all trying to get out of the station at the same time,” Shokumbi said. “I saw people jumping not caring where they landed or whether they broke bones.” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the city “utterly condemns the hideous individuals who attempt to use terror to harm us and destroy our way of life.” Friday’s incident is the fifth terrorist attack in London this year.
