Boko Haram kills 11 in military base attack
ABUJA, Nigeria—Boko Haram militants attacked a military base in northeastern Nigeria on Thursday, killing 11 people, including two employees of the UN migration agency, the UN confirmed on Friday. The UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) said several militants armed with automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenades, and gun trucks stormed a military base in the town of Rann in Borno state. The casualties included four soldiers, four mobile police officers, and three humanitarian workers. IOM said two of the aid workers were field employees with the organization. The base is located near a camp that houses about 55,000 displaced people. “We are outraged and saddened at the killings of two of our colleagues in an attack by Boko Haram in northeast Nigeria last evening,” Mohammed Abider, IOM’s director of operations and emergencies, said in a statement. Nigeria claims it has defeated Boko Haram, but the extremist group has intensified attacks in recent weeks. Militants last week kidnapped 110 girls from a boarding school in northeast Yobe state.
