Bipartisan House committee focused on China

Chairman Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., on Tuesday insisted their parties shared a desire to limit China’s growing influence. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo testified before the committee, saying that China’s economy has been waging war against the United States’ economy for at least 20 years. He said he supported the Biden administration’s measures confronting China, but he added more could be done.

What specifically did this hearing address? Gallagher—in an opening statement published but not delivered at the hearing—said that the previously “rogue” authoritarian regimes like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China, have been supporting each other’s war efforts and weapons development programs. He said their alignment now “looks a whole lot like an axis led by the Chinese Communist Party.”
