Biden issues executive order on artificial intelligence
President Joe Biden on Monday signed the order, which requires companies to develop new safety and security tests to use when training models. The directive aims to give federal agencies more oversight in the development of artificial intelligence programs and will require any company developing an AI product that poses a risk to national security—including economic security or public health safety—to share data with the government. The order also launched a pilot program called the National AI Research Resource that will provide grants for AI research on topics including climate change and health care.
How is AI being discussed internationally? The United Nations last week created an advisory body to consider international governance of AI. The 39-member board includes technology executives, government officials, and academics. The representatives will present their recommendations next summer. Meanwhile, Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is hosting a global summit on AI in London later this week.
