Battle for Mosul killed more than 9,000 civilians
The nine-month battle to liberate the Iraqi city of Mosul from Islamic State (ISIS) militants killed between 9,000 and 11,000 people, according to an Associated Press analysis. Reporters established the casualty count by cross-referencing morgue lists with databases maintained by nongovernmental organizations, the report said. The U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS earlier claimed responsibility for only 326 deaths. The report said Iraqi or coalition forces are responsible for at least 3,200 civilian deaths from artillery fire, mortar rounds, or airstrikes between October 2016 and the defeat of ISIS in July 2017. One-third of the victims likely died by ISIS violence. “It was the biggest assault on a city in a couple of generations, all told,” said Chris Woods, head of Airwars, which documents air and artillery strikes in Iraq and Syria. “And the disinterest in any sort of investigation is very disheartening.”
