Barbie passes $1 billion at box office in first three weeks

The film remained at number 1 in the worldwide box office on Monday. For comparison, the other half of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon, Oppenheimer, made over half a billion in the same time frame. Barbenheimer is an internet phenomenon based on the simultaneous release date of the two films, with some people seeing both films as a double feature. Oppenheimer, a serious biopic of the nuclear physicist, entered the weekend behind newcomer Meg 2: The Trench, an action-heavy shark movie.

How many other movies have made over $1 billion? Fifty-three other movies have reached the mark. Barbie is the first film directed solely by a woman to make over $1 billion. Three other films co-directed by women have surpassed a billion dollars: Frozen, Frozen 2, and Captain Marvel. The low-budget Sound of Freedom was considered a box office success, bringing in about $155 million.
