Aunt: Tamerlan Tsarnaev had wife, child and focused Muslim faith

The aunt of the suspected Boston bombers described the younger brother, Dzhokhar, as a “smart guy” who studies hard.

Maret Tsarnaeva, who lives in Toronto, Canada, said her brother brought his wife and Dzhokhar, his youngest child, to the United States in 2002. Tamerlan joined his family four years later. Tsarnaeva said she believes the brothers liked living in America.

But she also said she thought the photos of the boys released by the FBI were an attempt to set up her nephews. She questioned why authorities have not contacted her for more information.

During an often-combative interview with Canadian media, Tsarnaeva described her nephews as normal young men. She admitted Tamerlan had not found himself in America. She described the boys’ father, her brother Anzor, as having high expectations for his sons. Tamerlan was his favorite, she said, adding that when he dropped out of college, his father was disappointed.

About two years ago, Tamerlan began focusing on his Islamic faith, praying five times a day, his aunt said. But Tsarnaeva said she would not describe either of her nephews as devout Muslims.

She also said Tamerlan had a wife and a daughter, details police officials have not confirmed. Tamerlan died during a shootout with law enforcement officials early this morning. Police continue their manhunt for Dzhokhar in Watertown.
