Attacker detonates car bomb in Paris

French terror investigators say the man who rammed an explosive-filled car into a police vehicle in Paris on Monday had already caught the attention of security officials. The 31-year-old man who lived in a suburb of the French capital had an “S” file, meaning he was known for having potential terror ties. The explosion took place in the famed Champs-Élysées shopping district, popular with tourists. After the man detonated the explosives, police officers at the scene smashed the vehicle’s windows to pull him free from the burning wreckage. He later died of his wounds. No one else was injured in the incident. Investigators, who also found a handgun in the vehicle, called the attack “deliberate,” although they aren’t certain about a motive. In April, another attacker fatally shot a police officer on the Champs-Élysées , claiming he acted on behalf of Islamic State.
