At least one person dead as wildfires burn outside Athens, Greece
Firefighters on Tuesday battled the wildfire for a third day as weaker winds slowed the blaze. Greek officials evacuated thousands of people from towns around Athens and at least one person died as the fires moved toward the city. More than 700 firefighters and more than 200 firetrucks and aircraft battled numerous outbreaks across the region, Greece’s minister for climate crisis and civil protection Vassilis Kikilias said.
Have other countries offered to help? Italy sent two planes and France sent a helicopter to assist Greek first responders, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Firefighting teams from the Czech Republic and Romania also traveled to the area to help battle the blaze.
