At least 1 dead as Tropical Storm Lala skirts Hawaii
Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm Sunday as it passed just south of Hawaii Island without making landfall. Heavy rainfall and gusty winds were expected to continue over portion of Maui County and Oahu, with conditions deteriorating Kauai County, according to an update from the National Hurricane Center. As of Sunday afternoon, the storm was packing sustained winds of up to 65 mph—down from a peak of 80 mph—and was moving in a northwesterly direction at nearly 14 mph, but was expected to shift westward. The storm was forecasted to bring a total rainfall of 30-35 inches on the windward side of Hawaii's Big Island, with the rest of the island chain receiving about 2-6 inches, according to the National Hurricane Center.
What about injuries? One person died in a car accident related to the storm, according to a video statement issued by Gov. Josh Green on Sunday. He urged residents to remain at home and stay off the roads. At least 190 flights had to be postponed because of the storm, Green said. More than 200,000 homes in Hawaii were without power as of Sunday afternoon, according to Poweroutage.us. Three hospitals lost main power, but were running on backup generators, according to Green. Several trees were down and there was damage to several homes, Green said, adding that he had already initiated the paperwork for a major disaster declaration. Damage assessments would begin in earnest on Monday, he said.
