Argentine, Belgian citizens among New York attack victims

Five Argentines and one Belgian are among the eight killed Tuesday in a terror attack involving a truck in New York City, according to the countries’ foreign ministries. The Argentine victims were part of a group of friends celebrating the 30th anniversary of their graduation from the Polytechnic School of Rosario in Argentina. Another Argentine was recovering at New York–Presbyterian Hospital, the ministry said. Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said a Belgian woman, who “was on a city trip with her sister and mother,” was among the dead. Three other Belgians and one German were among the 11 injured in the attack. The suspect in the attack, Sayfullo Saipov, 29, drove a rental truck on a busy bike path near the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. Officials said the attacker came to the United States legally from Uzbekistan in 2010. Saipov remains in critical condition at a hospital after police officers shot him in the abdomen after he exited the vehicle shouting “Allahu akbar!” and waving what appeared to be weapons but turned out to be a pellet gun and a paint gun. Uzbek President Shaukat Mirziyoyev sent his condolences and offered his country’s assistance in investigating the attack.
