Amendment to GOP budget plan would axe Planned Parenthood funding
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., submitted an amendment to the GOP reconciliation bill on Wednesday to remove federal funding from Planned Parenthood. Taxes should never fund abortions or transgender insanity, Hawley wrote on Wednesday. Hawley’s amendment submission came the day after the Senate, without Democratic support, launched a new effort to approve funding for the Department of Homeland Security via the budget reconciliation process.
The Senate plan under consideration addressed funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and some for Customs and Border Patrol, which Democrats refused to approve earlier this year, causing the ongoing two-month funding lapse. The reconciliation plan may end the partisan stalemate by passing the budget with a majority vote between both chambers, allowing the measure to pass along purely party lines. It remains unclear whether Hawley’s amendment will be successfully adopted.
Didn’t Trump already pull Planned Parenthood’s federal funding? President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, included a ban on federal funding to Planned Parenthood. The bill stopped Planned Parenthood and affiliated groups from receiving Medicaid reimbursements. Hawley previously voiced his plan to introduce a bill extending the Trump administration's moratorium on funding Planned Parenthood, which is set to expire this July 4.
