Alabama college student arrested in terror plot
Alabama prosecutors say a 22-year-old college student arrested earlier this month had bomb-making materials in his apartment and planned to blow up a public building. Investigators arrested Aziz Sayyed on June 15 in Hunstville after getting a tip about his plans. He faces a second-degree charge of soliciting or providing help for terrorism. Prosecutors revealed more details about Sayyed’s plot during a Thursday bond hearing, during which they argued he was too dangerous to be freed. “The defendant has admitted in an interview with investigators the elements of his charge, to include planning and discussions regarding planting explosives in public building(s),” prosecutor Tim Gann wrote in his filing opposing Sayyed’s bail request. Police took Sayyed’s passport, and his defense attorney argues he’s not a flight risk. Officials have released few details in the case, except to say Sayyed was from North Carolina but was living in Hunstville.
