Airstrike in Syria hits school as children gathered outside
At least 14 children died today in an airstrike near the Syrian opposition stronghold of Idlib. The total casualty count is estimated between 17 and 22 dead, with the number expected to rise. The bombs struck a school complex as students gathered outside. It’s not yet clear who was responsible for the attack. Idlib is home to Syria’s main rebel groups but also harbors extremist fighters. Syrian government forces, along with their Russian backers, have conducted airstrikes in the region. But so have U.S. forces trying to root out Islamic State fighters. One activist on the ground claimed as many as 10 airstrikes hit the residential area in the village of Hass.
