Aftershocks close roads to quake-damaged Italian town
Strong aftershocks have damaged roads into the Italian town of Amatrice, which was leveled by an earthquake earlier this week. Emergency vehicles have been bringing hundreds of rescue workers back and forth to the town each day as dump trucks carry rubble away. Aftershocks this morning also disabled a key bridge to Amatrice. “The situation has worsened considerably,” Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said. “In terms of the emergency we have to make sure Amatrice does not become isolated, or risk further help being unable to get through.” The quake killed at least 267 people, but 215 people have been pulled from the rubble alive.
