A second freight train derails in Ohio but without any spills
Cleanup and investigations continued Monday from a Norfolk Southern train derailment near Springfield, Ohio, on Saturday. Authorities asked nearby residents to temporarily shelter in place after 28 train cars derailed, but officials later said the Springfield incident involved no hazardous materials and poses no risk to public health.
What else are authorities saying? Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said on Saturday that President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg had offered him federal government assistance. County and environmental officials say that since the Springfield-area derailment is not near a protected water source, public water systems and private wells are safe from any contamination. Meanwhile, Norfolk Southern has pledged millions of dollars toward cleanup from the toxic East Palestine train crash last month.
