At least 21 people died late Sunday night from a major highway crash involving three vehicles, according to a Monday morning statement from the Western Cape government. The fatal collision involved two minibuses and an SUV, leaving 21 dead and four others injured, officials reported. Western Cape officials said Monday that victim identification and survivor care were their top priorities. Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku warned that the crash site would remain closed for an unspecified period of time due to the accident’s severity.
What caused the crash? South Africa’s national Road Traffic Management Corporation said the cause of the crash was still unknown on Monday. The incident continued developing and the death toll may still rise as the ongoing investigation unfolded, transportation officials said. Officials planned to release more information as soon as it’s verified, the statement added.
