13 severely abused siblings rescued from California home

Doctors are treating 13 siblings for malnourishment after authorities discovered them living in inhumane conditions, held captive by their parents in a suburban home in Southern California. Authorities arrested David and Louise Turpin on charges of child endangerment and torture after their 17-year-old daughter escaped the home and called 911 on Sunday. Police who responded described a horrifying scene: Though the captive siblings found in the house ranged in age from 2 to 29, the adults in the group looked like children because of prolonged malnourishment. The family lived in dark, stinking conditions, and several of the children were chained to furniture. Neighbors described the family as reclusive but did not suspect child abuse. The children did not attend school outside the home, but a private school was registered at the home’s address. Relatives said they tried for years to maintain a relationship with the Turpins but were shut out. Bail for the parents has been set at $9 million each.
