WORLD Radio - The price of panache

Kicker: A Georgia handyman turned a discarded Barbie camper into a tiny gas-powered commuter vehicle—proving that when fuel prices rise high enough, even pink plastic starts looking practical.

MARY REICHARD, HOST: A Georgia handyman says high gas prices forced him to think smaller.

Mali Hightower now gets around town in…well, let’s hear him tell it—

HIGHTOWER: I am inside my infamous Barbie camper, the Barbie Jeep.

Yeah, the pint-sized pink camper that started life as a broken Power Wheels toy somebody threw away.

Hightower rescued it from the trash, installed a small gas engine, added lights, music, even a tablet screen—

HIGHTOWER: …Everything that you would pretty much see in a real, regular car.

Like a regular car that does not need 90 bucks to fill up.

HIGHTOWER: Gas is getting too high, so I gotta do what I can…

He says the tiny camper still gets him from point A to point B, though maybe not with much panache.

Then again, the price of panache is a little rich these days.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
