MARY REICHARD, HOST: Sometimes a “whoops” turns out alright after all.
That’s what happened to Sheila Pereira of Massachusetts. She’s an avid runner who signed up for the Worcester City Half Marathon. That’s not too far from her home just 15 minutes away from Worcester.
The problem is not long before the race, Pereira figured out the race wasn’t in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was 3,000 miles away in Worcester, England.
Looking on the sunny side, Pereira decided to run the race anyway, right there in New England.
She ran 13 miles of the half-marathon. She then sent a screenshot from a fitness app on her phone to the organizers of the race in England.
Race officials wished they would have welcomed her in person, but they were delighted that she ran the half-marathon across the pond. They said “we were only too happy to send her a medal and t-shirt.”
